Editor’s Notes: AND THE RACE IS ON!!!

2019 AWARDS SEASON

AND THE RACE IS ON!!!

The nominations are:

OUTER CRITICS CIRCLE opens the gate

DRAMA DESK another early break ………

And the much revered TONYS take the lead

As usual the OCC is the vox populi  honoring both on and off Broadway shows separately in a fair and democratic overview of the season.

The Drama Desk aspires to do same but goes further by combining both on and off Broadway shows competing with each other in each category which somehow limits each, and many worthwhile Broadway productions get squeezed out in favor of smaller sometimes obscure shows.

(this year To Kill A Mockingbird was overlooked)

Nevertheless if you compare graphs of the influence of these and Drama Desk nominations on the Tonys they seem almost identical.

The industry run Tonys are the Oscars of theater. A Tony award can be used as imprimatur to promote a show throughout the country and even abroad generating millions in income. Ditto for the recipients in every category. The phrase “Tony award winner” changes lives more than any other award

The 2018-19 season.

What does today's news mean for the rest of awards season? Does love from the Outer Critics Circle usually mean that a Tony nomination will follow?

Below, BroadwayWorld investigates how many Outer Critics Circle nominees of the past were subsequently nominated for Tony Awards. Additionally, we calculated the percentage of eligible nominees (discounting off-Broadway nominees) who earned Tony nominations in the past ten years. Check out the chances that this year's OCC nominees have at a Tony nod below!

Breaking: OKLAHOMA!, TOOTSIE & More Earn Drama Desk Awards Nominations- The Full List!In the past few weeks, we've watched the nominations roll in. Today the final crop of nominees have been revealed, all leading to next week's ultimate announcement- the 2019 Tony nominations.

Nominations for the 64th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced this morning at Feinstein's/54 Below by Michael Urie.

Drama Desk Award-winning actor Michael Urie (Torch Song, Buyer and Cellar, "Ugly Betty") will host The 64th Annual Drama Desk Awards, Sunday, June 2 at 8PM at The Town Hall in New York City. This marks Urie's fourth consecutive time hosting the ceremony.

The Drama Desk Awards, which are presented annually, honor outstanding achievement by professional theater artists on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway. What sets Drama Desk Awards apart is that they are voted on and bestowed by theater critics, journalists, editors and publishers covering theater. For this reason, Drama Desk Awards reflect enthusiasm for all aspects of New York's professional theater.

NOTE: THE BOYS IN THE BAND was not eligible for the Drama Desk Award because the production did not accommodate the nominators, due to the limited ticket availability and limited run of the show.

How likely are today's nominees to earn a Tony nomination? Find out!

Special Awards:

Ensemble Award: To the uncanny ensemble of Dance Nation for their pointed portrait of a dance troupe driven by competition but fused by the experiences of youth: Purva Bedi, Eboni Booth, Camila Canó-Flaviá, Dina Shihabi, Ellen Maddow, Christina Rouner, Thomas Jay Ryan, Lucy Taylor, and Ikechukwu Ufomadu.

Sam Norkin Award: To Montana Levi Blanco, who enriched this season with his vibrant and detailed costumes for Fairview, The House That Will Not Stand, Fabulation, Or the Re-Education of Undine, Eddie and Dave, "Daddy," and Ain't No Mo'. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a Blanco costume is worth considerably more, telling us a complete story about its wearer while giving us something fabulous to look at.

To Mia Katigbak, the backbone of the Off-Broadway scene, we acclaim her for her performances this season in Henry VI: Shakespeare's Trilogy in Two Parts, The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, Peace for Mary Francis and Recent Alien Abductions. This award also recognizes her vital presence as the artistic director of NAATCO and her sustained excellence as a performer and mentor.

To Repertorio Español for presenting a year-round rotating repertory of new and classic Spanish-language plays in its intimate Gramercy venue. For the past 51 years, Repertorio has been an indispensable theater for Spanish-speaking audiences, while inviting non-Spanish-speaking theatergoers to discover the delights of the Spanish-language canon and introducing New York audiences to the work of actors like Zulema Clares and Germán Jaramillo.
