Editor’s notes: The New Season ’14-‘15 Star Power on Broadway Producers have figured out they can recoup their investments quickly and painlessly by casting Hollywood stars in their shows. Actors can also make a quick bundle (and satisfy their acting chops) in limited runs on Broadway between making movies. The result – a celestial jamboree on Broadway for savvy theatergoers who will make sure to get their tickets often and early (see list of openings and closings below). The Plays (Shakespeare notably absent) The revivals Theatergoers will have the chance to re-visit theater history’s most revered playwrights reaching back in time: 1936 the Kaufman-Hart comedy You Can’t Take It With You, Edward Albee’s 1966 stunner A Delicate Balance (Glenn Close & John Lithgow, Martha Plimpton); The Elephant Man by Bernard Pomerance, (starring Bradley Cooper), which opened on Broadway 1979; Terrence McNally’s star studded, theater inspired, 1982 Its Only a Play (featuring Nathan Lane, F Murray Abraham, Matthew Broderick, Megan Mullally, Stockard Channing) Tom Stoppard’s introspective The Real Thing first performed in 1982 A. R. Gurney’s frequently produced two-hander (with script) features Brian Dennehy & Mia Farrow leading off a list of others still exchanging those Love Letters since 1989 Skylight by British dramatist David Hare opened at the Royal National Theatre in 1995 now starring Stella Gonet and Bill Nighy: and the relatively modern revival Kenneth Lonergan’s 1996 play This Is Our Youth set in the 80’s Upper West Side Reagan Era disenfranchised kids (3 Broadway debuts: Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin and Tavi Gevinson). Among the new plays: The Last Ship, Sting’s first and semi autobiographical musical growing up in the Newcastle area The Country House, said to be a cross between Chekhov and Noel Coward, starring Blythe Danner The Incident of the Dog, a British import with rave reviews, about an autistic child and the solving of a crime. Disgrace, racism as seen by a Moslem American Constellations, One relationship. Infinite possibilities. An explosive new play about free will and friendship (Jake Gyllenhaal)
