Kismet’s
best friend and Fair Harbor’s cherished citizen, known as “Binnie”
On
a sunny morning after a long year of trying, thanks to the joint efforts of Roz
Sackoff and Arlene Hirst, Binnie Steiner’s bench at the tennis court finally became
officially dedicated at her Kismet “office” ,the tennis court.
Notes from the event planners:
“We started planning this last year. Not sure who came up with the
idea for the bench, but it was a good idea. We went thru the proper channels
starting in Spring, 2016. Bench was supposed to be ready by July 4th weekend,
2016. It wasn't- it finally was delivered by Labor Day but we had a voluntary
storm evacuation that weekend. So we delayed the dedication until 2017. It was
well attended by Fair Harbor and Kismet friends along with Family and friends
from the mainland. Speakers included Roz, family members Herb, Michael,Felicia
and Andrew and friend Joan . All enjoyed refreshments during and after the
dedication. Binnie made sure that we had nice weather
You will be remembered, gracious Binnie - HAVE FUN.”
Roz
“We probably thought it up together.
lots of sturm und drang to get Islip's approval
but Marsha really helped push it through.
But it took from the beginning of last summer to Labor Day to get
it done”
Arlene
Friends,
neighbors and family spoke lovingly of their memories of her qualities.
Attendees
enjoyed champagne and chips and toasted Binnie
I
also knew Binnie from the tennis court and the book club, where her’s was a
respected opinion.
But
what impressed me most was how she officiated at the Firehouse for the Jewish holydays
Watching
her oversee the proceedings, distribute prayer books, arrange chairs and
generally see that the wine and cake table was set up.
As
she bustled around a phrase echoed in my head with my mothers’ voice
“Now there’s a mensch!”
