Lydon & Kai's great adventure:
Save the Seas and the Seals
They currently have raised $824 but are still accepting donations
trying to reach their goal of $1,000. You witnessed Sam giving us a donation
but we are so grateful to the many Kismet Community members that already made
some very generous donations
Jeannie,
The boys have been fundraising all summer for the Riverhead
Foundation which recently changed their name to NY Marine Rescue Center.
This is the organization that saved the baby seal off the beach
in Kismet this past Winter. They rescue Seals and Sea Turtles all over New York
State.
Kai, His Grandma Sharon and I were lucky enough to be given a
background tour of their facility housed at the Long Island Aquarium in May to
see “Basil” the Kismet seal while she was being rehabilitated.
We were also invited to her release into the ocean this summer.
It was amazing! Later in the summer Jen Cole and I went with
Lydon, his sister Riley, and Kai and we got another private tour of the
facility the day they were getting read to release the last seal they
had.
The boys have been selling shells lemonade in compostable cups and
eco friendly compostable pens in addition to 3 separate Facebook fundraisers.
Also, side note the boys have been collecting garbage off the bay
and beach for years. After seeing an art exhibit Washed Ashore Art to Save the
Sea we were inspired to make Art with some of the garbage we found. Last Earth
Day for a school project Kai made a sea turtle and this year for the Fourth of
July Parade we made a replica of Basil the Seal that was saved from the Kismet
Beach our float. It was made 100% of garbage 95% of which was found on the beach
and bay of Kismet. We called it Save our Seas and Seals and we won best in
show.
