Pizza Place to reopen as
SLICE 'N ICE
under new ownership of Brian Mahoney
by Jeanne Lieberman
New pizza place owner
Brian Mahoney can barely contain his enthusiasm at acquiring the pizza place.
No stranger to Fire
Island, he started working as a 14 year old in Ocean Beach at a place called
Morning Call washing dishes, waiting tables, and pretty much anything to do
with the restaurants on fire Island until he went to the University of South
Carolina where he majored in Restaurant Management.
Since then he has
opened three restaurants and sold them - pre-pandemic - good timing.
An admitted
workaholic, he’s been looking around for another opportunity while working in
restaurants in Bayshore. He actually called Dennis before Dennis, himself, was
planning to sell, having learned that Dennis sold his house in Kismet. Mahoney's
partners are Wes and Jason Little, owners of the Seaview Market.
Brian Mahoney actually
has a long history in Kismet.
His
Kismet pedigree is impeccable: his uncle, Michael, and Aunt Liz (of the Helm
family), actually owned the water company for over 30 years and we all know of
the many Helm houses in Kismet. And Brian who lives in Atlantique will never
be far away.
Why trust
an Irishman with pizza? Because Brian learned much during his close
association for many years with the Casa Befi Pizza restaurant in Bayshore,
which has inspired him, beside adding more modern pizza making equipment, to
get the best dough, flour and ingredients "in rich Italian style"
in the theory that "if you start with the good stuff you will end with
good stuff".
The ice
cream making equipment will be the same.
He has no
big plans at the moment to change the pizza place as he is planning to open
almost immediately.
The
obvious changes this first season will be longer hours and an extended season
(pending landlord Mooney’s approval).
He
envisions making the place the “nicest patio on fire island".
Judging
from Brian Mahoney’s energy and enthusiasm I am sure it will be.
Slice 'n
Ice may be up and running as you are reading this.
