Written by Jeffrey Scharf (book, music, and lyrics), COPPERFIELD! is playing a limited Off-Broadway engagement at The Duke on 42nd Street. The complex, chock-full two-act show details the adventures in the titular character’s life…

In 1999, the musical revue Our Sinatra, conceived, created, and performed by Eric Comstock, Christopher Gines, and Hilary Kole, made its debut at the Algonquin Hotel’s historic Oak Room. It transferred to Off-Broadway, has played two national tours, numerous regional runs, and many nightclub engagements. The popular show has now returned to the NYC stage with a…
Trauma exists; never doubt it. Dealing with trauma impels a lot of art, and many artists weave their lives, and their wounds, into their work. In 1956, Brooks Atkinson wrote, “Broadway is used to heart. It is not accustomed to evocations of the soul.” What is more soul-exposing than a piece that explores illness and death, in an intimate staging, where the audience itself becomes the beating heart of the show? Night Side Songs explores the life of Yasmine Holly (Brooke…
The ladies’ dresses are long and flouncy, the men’s vests bright and ornate, the cello and viola are sawing away in the pit, the lyricist is rhyming “reign” with “a-gain,” and the chorus is singing about injustice, class distinction, and, oh yes, love. Hooray, operetta’s back in town! The form’s been considered obsolete for nearly…
